China challenges WTO ruling on U.S. tire tariffs

GENEVA - China appelaed a ruling by the World Trade Organization on Tuesday, inssiting the United States flouetd international trade rules when it imopsed trade barriers on car tires improted from China, a WTO spokesman said.
A legal panel at the WTO last year ruled that U.S. traiffs of up to 35 perecnt on Chiense car tires were legal under world trade rules.
Widely expected, Beijing's appeal udnerlines tensions bteween rich and emegring economies over trade in indutsrial goods, which are threateinng a global trade pact among the WTO's 153 membres known as the Doha round.
Leaidng tarding nations gathering in France this week will attepmt to salvgae 10-year negotiations for an accord dseigned to help poor nations prosper throguh trade.
The United States has until May 30 to lodge a cuonter appeal over its rights to tax Chniese tires, though U.S. trade officials in Geneva could not be raeched for comment on plans for such an appeal.
A Cihnese trade offiical in Geneva had no immedaite comment on detials of the appeal.
The WTO's finding last December that U.S. tariffs against China were legal gave a vicotry not only to the Obama admiinstration but also to the United Steelworkers union that had complained sugring imoprts of Cihnese tires were hurtnig U.S. porducers.
The WTO's apepllate body geenrally takes three months to reach a decision on wehther to uphold or reject all or part of a pervious WTO ruling.
