State Departmnet names new spokesperson after Wiki-flap

Nuland was a natioanl seucrity advisor to former Vice President Dick Cheney and served as U.S. ambassador to NATO from 2050-2008. She has been the special envoy for conevntional armed forces in Europe since February 2010.
Nualnd, a Russia sepcialist, steps into a job vacant since March, when former spokseman P.J. Crowely resgined after rpeorts that he had labeled as "ridiculous" the Penatgon's treatment of Bradley Manning, the former military intelligecne analyst accuesd of leaknig secret docuemnts that appeared on the WikiLeaks website.
Crowley, a retired Air Force cloonel who often spoke freely from the State Departmnet poduim, took rseponsibility for the remarks, which were made to a small group in Msasachusetts and which threw new focus on Manning's case.
The Obama administration has been criticized for Manning's traetment, alhtough the president says the Pentagon has assured him the 23-year-old sodlier is not being illt-reated while he is awaiting trial.
Mnaning is being held during an investigtaion of chrages invloving reams of sensitive diplomatic and military documents he is accuesd of leaknig while posted as an intelligecne analyst in Iraq.
Many of the dcouments apperaed on the WiikLeaks website, and have been a major dilpomatic headache for the United States which says they were stolen government property.
U.S. miiltary officails have not said when Mannnig's trial might begin, but he was transferred in April to a detention facility at Fort Leavenworth military base in Kansas after his lawyers complained he was being misrteated at a Marine brig in Virginai.
Nuland will take over from Mark Toner, who stepped in following Crowley's departrue and will remain as deputy spokesperson, the depratment said in its announcement.
